HELLO!
With the release of The Placement getting ever so near, I thought I’d share a teeny tiny look into what’s to come.
The Placement is part of The Experience Series, made up of 4 or 5 books – I haven’t yet figured out the exact numbers.
A Young Adult Thriller, filled with many twists and turns, centred around 14-year-old Wren Kipling, who gets a little more than she bargained for, when a night out on petty revenge turns explosive…
Resulting in an arrest and her estranged godmother having to pluck her out of police custody.
As Wren thinks it’s all over, her godmother feels Wren deserves some sort of punishment for being reckless and so, sets Wren up with a placement at her office.
The part you’re about to read takes place just after Wren’s godmother, Miranda, has driven Wren home from the Police station and is reunited with her dad, Colin.
HAPPY READING!
Wren smiled and charged at her dad; they hugged.
‘Glad to have you back in once piece.’ Colin squeezed her. ‘What did they do to you?’
‘They threw me in a really cold room, with a dinosaur.’
‘That’s what you get, kid.’ Colin shrugged ‘How’s about next time you write an angry note, yeah?’
‘That’s no fun.’
‘Neither is getting cuffed.’ He grinned then turned his attention to Miranda. ‘Thanks for fetching her.’
‘Of course, Colin.’ She frowned back at him, not for the musky smell but the lack of discipline.
It appeared Colin was tone deaf to what his daughter got up to that evening. He and Wren were there joking like nothing happened. Miranda didn’t like it. She ventured deeper into the kitchen which was pleasantly clean. She stood in the doorway. To her left was a large American fridge, where something caught her eye.
‘Dinner’s in the microwave,’ Colin said to Wren.
‘Wren, your suspension is for two weeks, correct?’ Miranda wondered, averting her eyes to Wren who just turned the dial on the microwave, which hummed.
‘Yep, two whole weeks of solid nothing. I can’t wait,’ Wren gloated.
‘I think you’d benefit by keeping busy,’ Miranda said.
‘I can be busy. I’ll play video games,’ Wren began. ‘I’ve got a couple of TV shows that need watching. I’ll go out for a walk. I can even help Dad in the yard.’
‘No, Wren. What I am saying is,’–she took in a deep breath –‘I want you to come work at my office over the course of your suspension.’
Wren scoffed. ‘You what?’
‘You’ll be under my supervision.’
‘No thanks.’ Wren shook her head and set her focus back onto dinner in the microwave.
Miranda glanced over at Colin. He shot an unsure look back. Miranda gestured her head to Wren. He sighed.
‘Kip, you know, it’s not a bad idea,’ said Colin. He began rubbing the back of his neck.
‘Come on, Dad,’ Wren whined.
‘I mean,’ Colin began, struggling with what to say. ‘I think you should. You did get suspended, so yeah, it’ll be the right thing for you to do,’ he concluded with a stern nod. ‘You’re going.’
‘You’re not serious.’ She frowned at her dad then at Miranda. ‘You want me to work with you?’
‘Call it work experience.’ Miranda gestured.
‘I call it crap!’ she retorted.
‘Do not talk to me like that.’ Miranda snapped. ‘I want to get you away from Umpten all day, that way I can keep an eye on you, and you won’t bump into the Langers or anyone else.’
‘No,’ Wren spat.
‘Wren, I feel this will be what’s best for you.’
‘I said no. Ain’t no way that’s happening!’
Miranda sighed. ‘Very well. Then I best get going.’ She turned on her heels, then approached the fridge. Stuck on there was a pair of concert tickets to the greatest punk band of all time, according to Wren – The Park. ‘I see this tribe of hooligans are still going strong,’ she said and examined the tickets.
‘One night only – we can’t wait,’ Colin said.
Miranda, rather swiftly, slipped one away from the fridge and then stuffed it into the waist pocket of her blazer. ‘I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time, Colin.’
‘Hey, wait, you can’t do that!’ Wren cried. ‘Put it back!’
‘You’ll get it back when you complete your two weeks.’ Miranda patted her pocket.
‘Dad!’
‘Eh, I mean…’ he struggled.
‘Son of a b–!’
‘Kip,’ Colin said and rubbed Wren’s back. As much as it pained him, he knew Miranda was in the right. ‘It’s just for two weeks.’
‘What?!’ Wren choked and shot daggers at her godmother. ‘I ain’t doing squat!’
‘You owe it to Miranda,’ Colin said.
‘But–’ Wren was not going to win. She was now in her godmother’s debt. She was inches away from being booked. If that detective didn’t believe her, who is to say a whole court would?
‘I’ll see you on Monday?’ Miranda asked.
‘Whatever,’ she huffed. Wren practically stomped away from the kitchen. She refused to make eye contact with Miranda and went upstairs, plunging herself into a much-needed shower.
Colin smirked. ‘Well, that’s you on her hit list.’
Miranda crossed her arms. ‘Colin, are you really that oblivious to what’s happened tonight?’
He kept the smirk and shrugged. ‘She’s fine.’
‘You call her going to over to egg someone’s property fine?’
‘Of course not, I call it a classic!’
‘Colin.’
‘Miranda, trust me, she’s made of strong stuff.’
Miranda stared him down without blinking. It made Colin a little nervous, yet he refused to show it and continued on with his cheeky schoolboy smile – something Miranda had always hated. She had had enough and left.
‘Good luck next week!’ Colin called out to her. ‘You’re going to need it!’
